NAGPUR: In a late evening crackdown, the traffic police rounded up at least 20 persons for drink driving on Wednesday. The offenders, sent to different police lock-ups, would be produced before court today. Senior traffic inspector Jameel Ahmed said 10 cases of drink driving have been registered by west region, seven in east and three in north region respectively.
City police's traffic wing, stepping up vigilance to curb monsoon mishaps, has initiated a clamp down on drunken driving. Sources claimed that traffic police squads, equipped with breath analysers, had laid traps near various junctions, recreation clubs, pubs and liquor bars.
In Nagpur west, traffic police had conducted a stringent drive in different areas including Sitabuldi, Dhantoli, Sadar, Ambazari and Shankar Nagar. "The drive against drunken driving would be henceforth regularised but we would maintain the surprise element to conduct it on a random basis," said Ahmed. The officer also informed that the offenders, after being detected with alcohol odour in their breath on the road, was taken to the police station after conducting the medical examination to register the case.
Meanwhile, traffic department has strongly defended their action of seeking the service of vehicles of other government departments for special security duty after officials of forest department learnt to have ‘objected' the ‘brash' action.
"Those government officials who objected traffic action for arranging vehicles for special security should be exposed. The action has been initiated as per the legal sanction granted to the commissionerate of police by the government and order of the deputy commissioner of police, traffic to that effect," said Ahmed.
