NMC is facing huge loss due to failed registration of city hawkers. Unauthorized hawkers are growing in the city which causes lots of trouble to the moving traffic. NMC has incurred a loss of Rs 4.99 crores.

According to NMC sources 25000 hawkers operate in the city. They used to collect Rs 2/ hawker/ day. As the fees was very nominal the scheme was replaced. According to the new scheme license was compulsory for over 60,000 shops and over 25,000 vendors. Shops had to pay fees ranging from Rs 1000 to Rs 5000 for each establishment. NMC scrapped the new scheme due to opposition from existing vendors.

According to NMC officials 30 unauthorized weekly and daily markets operate in the city. NMC planned to give an alternative land to hawkers where they will get vendor platforms, power supply, public lavatories, benches and parking spaces, but the project is yet to take shape.

The unauthorized hawkers cause lots of inconvenience to the moving traffic as the vegetable vendors throw all the rotten vegetable which attracts cows and creates chaos.
