40 seats of Nagpur-based medical college restored

NAGPUR: The Centre has restored 40 seats of government-run Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) here, which were withheld by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for non-compliance of certain guidelines.

The MCI had sanctioned 100 seats for MBBS course in 1997-98 but 40 seats were withheld, including 20 seats for reserved categories, on certain grounds.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Vilas Muttemwar took up the issue with Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss after which the seats were restored from the current academic year, a release from Muttemwar's local office said today.

The release, however, did not elaborate on why the seats were withheld by the apex medical body.

Muttemwar, in a letter to Ramadoss, had said if these seats were not restored, meritorious students would be deprived from pursuing medicine.

Since the last date of completing admissions for MBBS course is September 30, the matter was take up on a priority basis with Ramadoss, the release said.

He had also written to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to use her good office in restoration of seats.
