NAGPUR: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has filed criminal complaints against five hospitals under Nagpur region, including one from the city, for non-compliance of bio-medical waste management and handling rules.
The court has served notices to these hospitals to appear for hearings next week.
The five hospitals served notice include the 100-bedded Shiv Shankar Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Pudwa, Gondia; the 50-bedded Panchayati Raj Hospital, Tiroda, Gondia; the 12-bedded Jaiswal Children Hospital, Central Avenue, Nagpur; the 10-bedded Balaji Institute and Hospital, Chandrapur, and the 10-bedded Sri Sai Nursing Home, Gadchiroli.
"The board was forced to take stern action as the hospitals did not take measures despite repeated warnings. The step is a signal to all big and small hospitals and the Primary Health Centres (PHCs) run by government to comply with the norms or face action," said V M Motghare, regional officer, MPCB.
Motghare told TOI that besides these five hospitals, the board is serving pre-prosecution notices to 60 clinics (including six in city) and 30 PHCs across six districts in the region (Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gadchiroli and Gondia).
The offence is punishable with imprisonment extending up to five years and fine up to Rs 1 lakh or both.
