NAGPUR: A man, in his mid-20s, hanged himself after slitting the throat of a woman he has been in love with for some time at Yogi Arvind Nagar on Thursday evening, leaving local residents shocked.
Durgaprasad Sonawane was found hanging from the ceiling of his residence. In a suicide note, Sonawane has claimed responsibility for slitting the throat of Manju Nagrikar, his neighbour.
Police said that Manju, a commerce graduate, was a computer student. Sonawane, who worked at a Sadar-based hotel, was renting the adjacent house for the last couple of years. Manju’s brother stays at Jabalpur while three of her sisters are married. Manju’s marriage was also fixed but, due to some financial issue, it was postponed to a later date.
Manju, who was not traceable since afternoon, was found lying in a pool of blood on the terrace with her throat slit. A hotel knife was also found near the body.
Yashodhara Nagar police were informed about the body. Initially, the cops did not suspect foul play and felt that Manju had ended her life. Even Manju’s father Bijaram claimed that it was suicide.
After some questioning, police learnt about the love affair. On going to his house, they found it locked from the inside. Police broke open the door only to find the hanging body of Sonawane.
“It was mentioned in the suicide note that the Manju, alias Prerna, was being loved by another man and it was impossible for Sonawane to stay without her,” said assistant commissioner of police, Vasant Sayyam, of Lakadganj division. “Sonawane had used a page of a register to pen the suicide note. He also requested his family in Seoni (MP) not be informed.”
Police found traces of blood on the terrace and staircase, implying Sonawane returned to his room via the terrace after the murder. The cops are awaiting the post-mortem report.
