Opposition slams govt for corruption in police force

Mumbai: The opposition parties, on Thursday, damned the state government for the poor law and order situation at the winter session of the state legislature being held in Nagpur. At the fore was the claim that lack of leadership in the home department has led to factionalism and an open fight among the officers in the police department. The home department was also criticised for dance bars still functioning in Mumbai and Thane.

Opposition leader Eknath Khadse said that police officers have begun acting on their on own whims as the government has lost control over the force. "None of the assurances made the government about improving the police force after 26/11 have been fulfilled. The state-of-the-art equipment and arms are yet to arrive. The newly set up Force One is being used for bandobast duty in the bylanes of the city. What type of preparedness do we have in case of an emergency in the future," Khadse said. "We have lost more than 50 policemen this year in fights with the naxals. The government has failed to set up an
effective mechanism to take on the naxals."

Khadse also criticised the government for the ladies bars that are doing brisk business in various parts of Mumbai and Thane. "The government has been claiming to have shut down the dance bars in the state. David Headley's connection with bar girls proves that the dance bars are still operational," he said. Bala Nandgaonkar of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena read out the names of the dance bars in Mulund, Thane and Navi Mumbai.

"The corruption in the transfer of the police officers has led to corruption in the police force. It's high time the government starts thinking why its best officers are leaving the force," Subhash Desai of Shiv Sena said.
