NAGPUR: Sushrut Hospital and Research Centre has introduced a new form of knee replacement surgery in city. The computer assisted and navigated surgery is more accurate and minimises the rehabilitation period of the patient.
"The surgery is performed using a computer assisted navigation system which allows a precision of 1 mm cut with one degree accuracy. It uses designed knee and hip implants which increase the life of the joint too," said Dr Sushrut Babhulkar, orthopaedic surgeon. Dr Babhulkar successfully performed the surgery on a 70-year-old who could walk independently within two days of the surgery.
Normally the success rate in knee implants is 93-95%. Dr Babhulkar claimed that the new technology will improve the accuracy to 99%. "The navigation machine is pre-fed with the path of the surgery and the exact details of the procedure. Hence, if the doctor goes wrong somewhere, it warns the doctor, thus helping him reach the precise place," he said.
