RAMAN SCIENCE CENTRE – A Step towards safeguarding the pride of Orange City!

I can still recall that day crystal clear in my mind, when I first visited Raman Science center in 1997 when our school had arranged a 1 Day visit to Raman Science Center. All of us were very enthusiastic and restless to see the Science Gallery / Museum and recently opened Planetarium at that time. The Centre proved to be more than our expectations!

Raman Science Centre, at Nagpur is an interactive science center affiliated with Mumbai’s Nehru Science Centre. The centre was developed to promote a scientific attitude, portray the growth of science and technology and their applications in industry and human welfare, and hold science exhibits. The centre is named after famous Nobel Prize winner Indian physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. The Raman Science Centre was inaugurated on 7 March 1992 and the planetarium was started on 5 January 1997. The centre is located opposite Gandhi Sagar Lake in the heart of Nagpur. Between April 1, 2006 and March 31, 2007 the centre recorded a visitor count of 307,074. The centre is part of the National Council of Science Museums, India which is also the largest network of science centers/museums under a single administrative umbrella in the world. NCSM rates the centre as regional level and it has a total floor area of 4333 sq meters.

The centre carries out numerous programs to spread science and technology knowledge amongst the general public. The centre along with local NGO HIRWAI gives the Green Finger Award to create awareness about the environment amongst school children. In August 2007, the information and communication technology gallery was opened where ISRO Chairman Madhavan Nair declared that India will send astronauts in space by 2015. The Center exhibits:

INVENTION GALLERY:
It gives information about various inventions in the field of science & technology particularly about the mechanical systems, travel and communication technology etc. These exhibits explain the fundamental scientific principles involved in inventing in a dramatic and easily understandable manner using interactive exhibits.

FUN SCIENCE I & II:
A total of 80 participatory exhibits in these galleries give ample information that can be memorable for the visitors. The exhibits placed in this gallery give hands on experience to the students and general visitors to study various laws and principles of science in an enjoyable way. How the joints in our body move to enable smooth movements? Why we see infinite images of an object? And many more queries can be solved by visiting these halls.

NEW GALLERY ON INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION:
This Gallery gives information about the journey of Information and communication technology from the dawn of civilizations till today. It is a small effort to present the entire concept of Digital Information Revolution in interactive, interesting and simple fashion.

PLANETARIUM:
In Planetarium visitors can see night sky during daytime. Raman planetarium has 133 seats capacity & computer controlled ‘Karl Zeiss Sky Master ZKP-III Projector’.

PRE-HISTORIC ANIMAL PARK WITH LIGHT & SOUND SHOW:
This is a 3 dimensional multimedia exposition that enthralls the visitors by taking back to pre-historic era in which different species of animals lived in the sea as well as on the land about 500 to 10,000 million years ago. During day time it is open for students but in the evening a light & sound show is also organized. It is built over an area of 2 acres and first of its kind in the central India.

As time passed, I feel that the attraction of this Center has faded to some extent. Being an important aspect of science and technology, this center plays a very important role in grooming children in science and technology field. I being a proud citizen of Orange city would like to request all citizens as well as tourists to take time out and visit the center. Recently, many new innovative attractions are added for all of us. I would like to give a message to all Nagpurian’s, that we should take responsibility towards at least preventing the importance of this center by campaigning, referring it to tourists or guest / relatives who visit the city to have a visit. Anything that may add more visitors to the center will prove beneficial for the center. I did it by writing this article on the most viewed website of Nagpur. Now it’s your turn friends…

With best regards,
