Thanks to varsity, only 1 syllabus for umpteen students

AGPUR: It seems that Nagpur University officials like to harass students in one way or the other. This time, the students have been hit by shortage of syllabus.

According to the students, the shortage is so acute that for some post graduation courses like masters of law (LLM), only one syllabus is available in the Publication Department of university's main library in Ramdaspeth.

Students told TOI that the situation is so pitiable that the university officials shamelessly tell them that there is only one syllabus available and that they should make photocopies from their own pocket.

"They tell us to first deposit Rs 100 for taking the original syllabus out of department saying that if we fail to return the copy, they will land in trouble as no other copy is available," said a dejected student.

"Of course, they return our deposit but we have to go all the way to Ramdaspeth square as there is no photocopying facility inside the huge university library premises. To add to the woes, the problem of load-shedding makes the problem worse as photocopying machines can't operate without power," adds another student.

Ironically, the five-decade-old library located at the heart of the city is being renovated at a whopping cost of Rs 47 lakh but no thought was given for installation of a photocopying machine or even a generator in the premises for the benefit of students.

The university's publication department is responsible for printing, publishing and distributing syllabuses of 700 odd courses conducted by the university. Many students flock the premises to buy syllabus but most of the time they have to go through the harrowing process.

Students informed that classes in colleges commenced in the first week of July. In this situation, with no syllabus, they can't study. The situation is even worse for courses of which syllabuses have changed from this academic session.

When contacted, officials from the publication department, who did not wished to be named, admitted that there is a tremendous shortage of curriculum, especially for the new courses.

"We don't have any option but to take Rs 100 as deposit from the students to give them the syllabus. Many times, students fail to return the original copy after making photocopies. We can't go around looking for them," the official said. Deliberating on the reason behind the shortage, the official too agreed that funds crunch is hampering publication work.
