State sets up panel to improve higher education

MUMBAI: Alarmed by the slow and steady deterioration of higher education, the higher and technical education department, led by senior NCP leader Rajesh Tope, on Thursday set up a nine-member committee headed by Ram Takwale, a former vice-chancellor of Pune university and Indira Gandhi National Open University to make recommendations on improving the standard of education.

Nagpur varsity blacklists 360 colleges without full-time heads

NAGPUR: As many as 360 colleges have been blacklisted by the Nagpur University for flouting norms by not appointing a regular Prinicipal or Head of the institution.

A good number of these colleges are either named after or run by city politicians or belong to big industrial houses.

A High Court bench here had recently directed Nagpur University to make it mandatory for all colleges in Maharashtra to appoint regular Principals or Directors before May 31, 2009, well before the commencement of new academic session of 2010-11.

Single entrance exam for all medical colleges from next year

New Delhi: In a major decision that was conveyed to the Supreme Court on Friday, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has said that their decision to introduce one common entrance test for all medical courses in India has been accepted by the Union Ministry and would be introduced from the next year, that is, 2011.

The new common medical entrance test would be applicable for a total number of 30,000 MBBS seats and over 11,000 MD seats in 138 government run medical colleges as well as 133 private medical institutes.

NAGPUR: The state education department has advanced the release of lists for science and commerce admissions to Class XI by four days. Now, instead of August 16, the lists will be released on Thursday at 12 noon on education department's website. It will also be dispatched to respective schools by 5 pm. With this, the admission process for Class XI will move forward.

According to assistant director for education in Nagpur, Rajendra Godhne, both lists will have as many as 19,000 applicants with names of their respective colleges.

Colleges throw varsity's admission ban into bin

NAGPUR: A majority of BEd aspirants face an uncertain future. Despite the university blacklisting at least 60 colleges for failure to appoint full-time principal/directors and also banning admissions, the state department of higher education is continuing its admission process.

In fact, the department has already conducted two rounds and admitted students in many of them. The third round will begin in a couple of days.

NU yet to appoint contributory teachers

NAGPUR: Due to the strange ways of Nagpur University, students continue to suffer. It’s been a month since the academic year started, but still, there are no signs of contributory lecturers, thanks to the university officials who are yet to clear their files.

As a result, none of the 39 departments have been able to make appointments. Students pursuing postgraduate courses have been left in the lurch due to the absence of nearly 50-odd teachers.

MBA exam lingers on over 3 months!

NAGPUR: Jobs are scarce. Good jobs are scarcer. Campus recruitments have dropped phenomenally owing to slowdown. In such a situation Nagpur University has made it tougher for MBA students by turning their examination into a never-ending exercise.

No eligibility for colleges without principals: UoP V-C

PUNE: The University of Pune will not grant eligibility to those colleges and recognised institutions, which admit students to first-year courses for the academic year 2010-11, despite not having a full-time principal/director in place, as sought by the Supreme Court, university vice-chancellor R K Shevgaonkar said here on Tuesday.

"We are bound by the apex court's order and we won't allow admissions at such colleges unless they have either adhered to the court's directive or have secured relief from the court," Shevgaonkar said.

MBA, MMS admissions begin from July 27

NAGPUR: The admissions for Master of Business administration (MBA) will restart from Tuesday 27 after a week. The admissions were halted midway due to AICTE's decision to withhold the approvals it had granted to new institutions.
