CBI probe on but NHAI to go ahead with highway deal

NEW DELHI: After a five-month deadlock, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is all set to sign the concession agreement of the controversy ridden Nagpur-Betul (120 km) highway project. The project, which came under CBI scanner, has now got the go-ahead for signing of the concession agreement after NHAI sought legal opinion in this case.

FM-III 1st phase to auction 160 stations

Having worked out a three-year staggered auctioning of 806 FM stations between 2011-2013 under phase-three policy of private FM radio, around 160 FM stations across 60 towns will be initially auctioned in the first year beginning January 2011.

No HC relief for man who shot at cops, gangster

MUMBAI: Ravindra Sawant's act of shooting at gangster Ashwin Naik and three police officers was an attempt at challenging the government writ, the Bombay high court said, while dismissing his plea for early release from prison. Sawant, who is serving a life term at Nagpur Central prison, had challenged the state's decision to keep him in jail for 30 years, including remissions (jail days credited for good conduct).

Traffic park becomes a play zone!

NAGPUR: The very purpose of opening the traffic park seems to have been defeated. Forgetting the main objective of educating people, especially children, of Nagpur about traffic rules and safety measures on road, the place has now been reduced to an ordinary garden with main intention of generating revenue for the contractor.

Zoo deer deaths echo in LS

NAGPUR: The controversial deer deaths in Maharajbagh zoo have found echo in the Parliament with People For Animals (PFA) leader and BJP MP Maneka Gandhi raising the issue in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday morning.

The BJP MP from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh was quite concerned after two deer and three emus died due alleged negligence of zoo officials between August 13 and 20. What is more shocking is that a deer and an emu were buried without conducting the mandatory post mortem.

Gosikhurd project

NAGPUR: Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) has been given permission by state government to store 300 million cubic metres (mm3) water in Gosikhurd reservoir this year.

However, the Corporation has to complete rehabilitation of 14 villages in Nagpur and Bhandara districts. Seven villages have already been shifted while relocation of remaining is expected to be complete by September end.

Dr Motghare gets anticipatory bail

NAGPUR: Close on the heels of Vandan Mohod, associate dean of College of Agriculture, Dr Abhijeet Motghare, ex-in charge of the Maharajbagh Zoo, was also granted ad-interim anticipatory bail by the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court on Tuesday.

NMC's helping hand

NAGPUR: One can see Shobhit Gaikwad's eyes shining and a smile on his face with the anticipation of standing on feet and walking with his friends to school. This will be first time that Shobhit, a standard II student from Mohan Nagar municipal school, will be able to do so. It is thanks to efforts of Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) education department that provided him with a walker, a splint and also a commode chair.

Zila Parishad distributes nearly a million saplings

NAGPUR: Nagpur Zilla Parishad launched its 'One Person, One Tree' programme this monsoon. And, if one can trust volunteers and people to plant and care for the trees, it is very successfully too. As of now, a total of 9,91,034 saplings have been distributed all over the district to be planted.

Sources said that social forestry department has provided 17,00,584 saplings of mango, chicku, neem etc to the ZP. Of these, more than half have been distributed among volunteers and public for being planted and remaining would be given before the end of rainy season.

Citizens to give cops jammers, vehicle lift

NAGPUR: Fed up with the growing parking menace in Ramdaspeth, residents have decided to present traffic police with jammers to act against errant motorists parking vehicles in front of homes. The Ramdaspeth Plot Owners' and Residents' Association is also procuring a truck to give to traffic cops to help them lift wrongly parked vehicles.

The association really wants to leave cops with no excuses for not acting. It would also deploy four security guards to help traffic police streamline traffic in the area, which houses many commercial complexes and shopping malls.
