Nagpur getting prepared to fight Listeriosis

Listeriosis is a disease which is caused by infection from a soil borne bacterium which can get inside the human body through food. This bacterium leads to death of many new born and unborn children. Indian doctors are not yet trained to diagnose the disease.

City based Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) has launched a project to develop diagnostic kits and vaccines for the disease. The disease attacks those with depressed immune system like AIDS patient, elderly people, pregnant mothers etc. This disease spreads from the gastrointestinal track to the brain causing meningitis and ultimately death of the patient.

It is a zoonotic disease which can spread from animal to man and from man to animal. The disease is caused by eating infected milk, fruits and vegetables.
