Syed Haider Raza

Syed Haider Raza (b. 1922) Born in Madhya Pradesh, Raza studied in Nagpur, Maharashtra and later at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. He was one of the founding members of the Progressive Artists Group, Mumbai. In 1950 he won a scholarship from the French government to study at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris and later settled in the French capital. In 1956, he received the Prix de la Critique in Paris. He has had solo exhibitions in galleries across India, and has had his work shown in the international exhibitions of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, in the group shows of "Ecole de Paris," "Salon Comparaisons", "Réalités Nouvelles", "Recherche et Expression", "Salon Grands et Jeunes d'Aujourd'hui".

He received the Padma Shree award from the Government of India in 1981. Raza divides his time between Paris and Gorbio in France.
