Nagpur Municipal Corporation installing X-ray machines at Octroi check posts

To stop corruption and increase revenue from octroi collection Nagpur Municipal corporation (NMC) is planning to install X-ray machines at Octroi check posts i.e all entry points into the city. The scanners will help officials collect the Octroi accurately from loaded trucks and auto rickshaws. No one will be able to fool the octroi officials. In the current situation to check the load of covered vehicles the officials had to tap the vehicle and check the pressure of shock absorbers to calculate octroi. Many vehicles paid less octroi as the system is not very efficient.
Vehicle carrying books published by Anna Hazare's NGO attacked

Anna Hazare was in Nagpur on 16th May 2012. He is always in news due to Lokpal bill and his anshans to get corrections in various clauses of Lokpal bill. The vehicle which was accompanying Anna Hazare was attacked. Anna was saved as he was not in the vehicle and the vehicle was carrying books published by Anna Hazare's NGO.
No Air ticket booking for Spice Jet from 1st June 2012

Spice Jet has stopped booking air tickets from 1st June 2012. Spice Jet operates daily flights to Delhi and Bangalore. Some months back Kingfisher airlines stopped flights to Hyderabad and indore and it seems its is now turn of Spice jet.
Travel agents have been asked not to book spice jet ticket from 1st June 2012. It hints that spice jet is planning to wind its operation from Nagpur. The airline had good response in the Delhi and Bangalore route inspite of competition with Indigo, Air India and Go Air.
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport receives Airport Authority of India Chairman's award

Nagpur Airport receives special Airport Authority of India (AAI) Chairman's Award for installation of new system called Indra. This system allows airport officials to connect with the aircraft. It increase the efficiency and reduces chances of mishaps and error by humans. The new system will connect aircraft to air traffic control (ATC) department and help it gain height if it is coming down to avoid collision in the air. It will save 1.28 crore litres of fuel every year.
VNIT to start MSC in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) is starting MSC in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from the academic year 2012-2013. The entrance exam will be held on 27th May 2012. Forms can be downloaded from the website www.vnit.ac.in under the link MSC. The filled forms should be submitted before 22nd May 2012.
Candidates who have cleared Joint Admission Test (JAT) need not appear for the institutes admission test. The can directly apply for admission.
Nagpur houses 3 big cord blood banking services

Cord blood banking (CBB) is a service in which the stem cells from umbilical cord of child is stored for future use for treating genetic and non treatable diseases. 3 major cord blood banking companies have opened up centres in Nagpur are Reliance Life Cell, Cryo Bank and Baby Cell. Cord cells are collected within 15 minutes of delivery and maintained in a cold chain and then stored in the respective CBB.
FDA officials destroyed artificially ripened mangoes

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials destroyed mangoes worth Rs 1 Lakh which were ripened by Calcium Carbide. The raid was conducted in santra Market. According to officials more raids will be conducted in coming days so that fruit sellers stop using chemicals for ripening of fruits.
Assistant commissioner (food) SB Naragude said that calcium carbide used for ripening fruits have severe health problems. The chemical changes the color of fruit from outside while the fruit is yet to ripen from inside.
Jamanlal Goenka College and Hospital of Akola fined for charging extra fees

The national consumer dispute redressal forum has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 to Jamanlal Goenka College and Hospital for charging extra fees of Rs 3,37,500 from Dr Rahul Paras Maru of Indore.
Premchand Mishrikotkar, head of the Akola district forum has ordered college authorities to deposit a sum of Rs 50,000 in “Consumer Legal Aid Account of National Commission”. It has also directed college authorities to refund the excess fees.
The college authorities also approached State forum and National Commission which turned down their appeal and ruled in favor of Dr Maru.
Energy drinks and powder not healthy

After carbonated drinks it is energy drinks which are proved not to be healthy by Health experts. The tall claims made by the company and advertisements are not true. They do more harm than good. These drinks cause harmful side effects in the long run. The artificial elements used in these drinks cannot replace the natural contents.
Wildlife Sanctuaries to remain open in monsoon this year

Pravin Pardeshi, principal secretary of forest department has initiated discussions with PCCF Wildlife (Maharashtra) to keep wildlife sanctuaries open in monsoon season this year. Only Tadoba Andheri Tiger Reserve (TATR) remained open in monsoon while other parks were closed.
Opening of national parks in the monsoon season will help protect wild animals as tourist can also inform guard if they find something unusual happening around them. No tourist vehicles will be allowed inside the park but only forest vehicles will be used for movement inside the park.
