Union minister for urban development Kamal Nath has assured that Metro rail in Nagpur city maybe functional within 18 months, if details report is received from Maharashtra government in time.

On further details about Nagpur’s ambitious Metro Rail project, Kamal Nath said “Metro rail project has been proposed in 24 cities including Nagpur. I have asked chief minister Prithviraj Chavan to send a proposal. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) requires 8 months to prepare the detailed project report (DRP) highlighting various technical issues including distance of over and under ground rail network. The operation will be done by a special purpose vehicle. The government is also ready to bear 50% cost of DPR. There should be no delay in sending the proposal”

According to reports, state government is yet to appoint an agency to prepare proposal for Metro rail in Nagpur region. NMC & NIT have shown interest, and NIT has already sent the proposal. But the state government has to take a decision soon as Central government is keen on giving approval for Nagpur Metro Rail project.
