The city-based Vidarbha Economic Development Council (VED) has been very actively pursuing this matter with state government. Initially the IIIT was planned to be set up in Pune, but to some problems, the nagpur angle was explored and finally accepted.

The IIITs are a part of initiatives by NASSCOM for educational and workforce enhancement.
