Over 50 Tribal Ashramshala teachers have gone on hunger strike till their demands were met, at RBI Square, Nagpur. These protesters represented teachers employed at ashramshala in Gadchiroli, Gondia, Bhandara and Chandrapur districts. These teachers were not paid salary since last 3 years. Ashramshalas are places in tribal area which gives food, clothes, shelter and books for school students.

The ashramshala management had employed teachers on the note that they will have to serve at a salary for Rs 3000 – Rs 5000/ Month for first three years and then their salary will increase to Rs 30,000 / Month. But they have not kept their promises which has led to agitation by grieved teachers. But till date they have not received any salary and the school authorities say they cannot pay them any salary as they are yet to receive any formal letter from the ministry.

The problem is the employed teachers are left at the mercy of their parents as they have not received any salary. Some are facing problems of marriage as no one is ready to marry their daughters to someone who cannot run the family. These teachers are getting mentally and emotionally tortured.

City MLC Nago Ganar’s teachers union has supported the protest and he said he will meet the ministry officials and sort out the matter. If the matter is not sorted out, he told he will himself join the strike till the matter gets resolved.
